STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF 30th ANNIVERSARY OF THE TERROIST ATTACK ON THE TURKISH EMBASSY IN OTTAWA ON MARCH 12, 1985

On the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the deadly terrorist attack by three heavily-armed members of the Armenian Revolutionary Army on the Turkish Embassy on March 12, 2015, Turkish Canadian Society of Edmonton commemorates and pays tribute to the memory of Mr. Claude Brunelle, a 31-year-old private security guard and a student from the University of Ottawa. He was killed by the terrorists during the attack while he courageously defended the Turkish Embassy.

During the attack, terrorists took 13 people hostage, including the Ambassador, his wife, children and the Embassy staff. Ambassador Coşkun Kırca escaped a certain death by jumping out of the second floor window of the building. However, his right arm, right leg and hip bone were fractured and he laid on the ground for four hours, without medical care. An Ottawa Police officer risked his life to protect and rescue the Ambassador by lying over his wounded body during the ordeal.

This attack complies neither with the values we adopt in Canada nor with Canada’s strong culture of tolerance and coexistence. It is not different from the recent terrorist attacks of October 2014 which resulted in the deaths of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo.

As reported in the “Ottawa Citizen” (October 21, 2014) and the “National Post” (October 22, 2014), the attack against the Turkish Embassy in 1985 was one of the first terrorist attacks against foreign diplomats in Ottawa. Regardless of its motivation and regardless of the names of its perpetrators, terror is a common menace of all humanity to unite against it.

On this occasion, we once again remember and condemn this heinous terrorist attack in its 30th anniversary, and denounce terrorism in all its forms and types. Terror has no ethnicity, no religion, no country, no moral limitation and no respect for any shared values. As Turkish Canadians we denounce all forms of terrorism, and hope to raise our children with love instead of hate, and with values for tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
